Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to two fires between last night and early this morning.
Radley Bay Fire
At 7:26 p.m. on Tuesday, January 25, 2022, the WFPS responded to reports of a vehicle fire in the 0-100 block of Radley Bay.
When WFPS crews arrived on-scene, they encountered smoke and fire coming from a vehicle that was at risk of extending to a single-family residential house. Crews attacked the fire, working to protect exposures. They declared the fire under control at 7:43 p.m.
No injuries were reported.
The vehicle suffered significant fire damage, with minor damage to the exterior of the house. The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimates are available at this time.
Main Street Fire
At 3:13 a.m. on Wednesday, January 26, 2022, the WFPS responded to reports of an automatic alarm at a four-storey, multi-residential structure in the 600 block of Main Street.
Upon arrival at the scene, crews found smoke and a small fire coming from a suite on the third floor. Crews initiated an offensive attack and quickly extinguished the fire.
Paramedics assessed and transported one patient to hospital in unstable condition. No other injuries were reported.
Damage to the suite was minor, though estimates are not available. The fire is believed to have been caused by smoking. Residents are reminded of the following tips to stay safe:
- Smoke outside where possible.
- Use only fire-safe cigarettes.
- Use a deep, sturdy ashtray. Place it away from anything that can burn.
- Keep cigarettes, lighters, matches and other smoking material up high and out of the reach of children.
- Do not discard cigarettes in vegetation such as potted plants, mulch, dried grass or leaves.
- Dose butts and ashes in water or sand before discarding to ensure they are out.
