Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fire on Mountain Avenue

Released: January 24, 2022 at 3:08 p.m.

Winnipeg, MB – At 1:13 p.m. on Monday, January 24, 2022 the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a fire in a three-storey apartment building in the 300 block of Mountain Avenue.

Once crews arrived on-scene, they encountered smoke coming from a suite in the building. They launched an offensive attack, declaring the fire under control at 1:36 p.m.

Many occupants of the complex self-evacuated prior to crew arrival.

Two patients were assessed on-scene by paramedics. One was transported to hospital in stable condition. The other was transported to hospital in unstable condition. No other injuries were reported.

Mountain Avenue is closed in both directions between Charles Street and Salter Street while crews wrap up fire operations. Water used to fight the fire has created some patches of slippery conditions in the area. The City is expected to improve traction by applying sand and de-icing agents to impacted roadways and sidewalks. Motorists and pedestrians are advised to use caution once the area reopens.

The suite of origin sustained significant fire damage, with heavy to moderate smoke and water damage to two floors. The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimates are available.
