Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fires on McKenzie Street and Elmhurst Road

Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to two structure fires this afternoon.

McKenzie Street Fire

At 12:05 p.m. on Sunday, January 2, 2022, the WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a vacant two-storey, multi-family structure in the 100 block of McKenzie Street.

When crews arrived on scene they encountered heavy smoke coming from the building. An offensive attack was launched, but due to deteriorating conditions crews were forced to exit the building and transition to a defensive attack. Once some of the flames were knocked down, crews once again entered the structure and the fire was declared under control at 1:42 p.m.

Crews completed a search of the building an no occupants were found. One neighbouring home was temporarily evacuated as a precaution. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimates are available at this time.

Elmhurst Road Fire

At 3:32 p.m. on Sunday, January 2, 2022, the WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a single-family home in the 800 block of Elmhurst Road.

Upon arrival on scene, crews encountered smoke coming from the house. An offensive attack was launched and the fire was declared under control at 4:16 p.m.

All occupants of the house self-evacuated prior to the arrival of crews. On-scene paramedics assessed one individual, and the patient was transported to hospital in stable condition. No other injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Damage estimates are not available at this time.
