Winnipeg, MB – Today, the City of Winnipeg marked the opening of the Sturgeon Creek Greenway Trail, located between Hamilton Avenue and Saskatchewan Avenue along the east side of Sturgeon Creek. The reconstructed pathway completes the Yellow Ribbon Trail, an important multi-use active transportation route connecting St. James to Downtown.
“Projects like this improve the health and quality of life for Winnipeggers,” said Councillor Matt Allard, Chairperson of the Standing Policy Committee on Infrastructure Renewal and Public Works. “They reduce traffic when people choose active transportation, and they help us in our fight against climate change by reducing the number of vehicles that would be on the road."
The $445,000 Sturgeon Creek Greenway Trail project included widening, reconstruction, and asphalt paving of the existing 730 metre granular pathway, and the addition of 160 metres of new asphalt pathway.
“I’m excited to see the upgrades that will allow more people to use to the Sturgeon Creek Greenway Trail,” said Councillor Scott Gillingham, St. James. “The trail is an important recreation pathway for people of St. James and is situated along Sturgeon Creek, one of the most beautiful settings in the city.”
With the completion of the Sturgeon Creek Greenway Trail project, residents can travel from Saskatchewan Avenue to the Downtown along the completed Yellow Ribbon Trail.
"By tying this pathway to the Yellow Ribbon Trail, this upgrade grows the City's bike network and provides a safe, comfortable connection into the heart of the city,” said Mark Cohoe, Executive Director of Bike Winnipeg. “We urge the city to continue growing its investment in active transportation and look forward to the day when all residents have safe, comfortable, and convenient cycling access to the destinations that enrich their daily lives."
Other components of the Sturgeon Creek Greenway Trail project include pathway lighting to improve safety and visibility, new benches, and a universal design to promote and improve access for all users. Additional landscaping will be completed in the spring.
