Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to two fires this evening.
Henry Avenue Fire
At 4:42 p.m. on October 25, 2021, the WFPS responded to a monitored alarm in a residential high-rise in the 100 block of Henry Avenue.
When crews arrived, they found one suite in the building fully-involved in flames and smoke. Due to the potential for high life hazards when dealing with a high-rise structure, a second alarm was called which increased the number apparatus on scene. An offensive attack was launched and the fire was declared extinguished at 5:14 p.m.
Crews evacuated residents from the building. No injuries were reported. The majority of the building will be able to be reoccupied once firefighters complete ventilation of the building.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimates are available at this time.
Nairn Avenue Fire
At 6:57 p.m. on October 25, 2021, the WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a vacant one-and-a-half storey house in the 400 block of Nairn Avenue.
When crews arrived at the scene, they found a well-involved fire, with heavy smoke and flames coming from the house. A defensive attack was launched as conditions were unsafe for firefighters to enter the structure. Crews are using an aerial ladder and handlines to extinguish the fire and protect neighbouring homes. It is anticipated crews will be on scene well into the night.
Both neighbouring homes have been temporarily evacuated as a precaution. No injuries have been reported.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Damage estimates are unavailable at this time.
