Mayor Bowman to Travel to Vancouver to Take Part in the Royal Canadian Navy's Canadian Leaders at Sea Program

Winnipeg, MB – At the invitation of the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN), Mayor Bowman will travel to Vancouver, BC over the weekend to take part in the RCN Canadian Leaders at Sea Program.

“Winnipeg is a city that has a strong history and strong ties to the Canadian Armed Forces,” said Mayor Brian Bowman. “The Canadian Leaders at Sea Program is an opportunity to see what life is really like for members of our RCN. The opportunity to spend time with the colleagues of the HMCS Winnipeg, who I’ve regularly met with, is a great honour.”

There were plans to help commemorate last year’s 25th Anniversary of the HMCS Winnipeg, however, those plans were cancelled as a result of the pandemic.

Mayor Bowman will be aboard the HMCS Harry DeWolf alongside RCN sailors to gain a deeper understanding and perspective of their mission in service to Canada. The Mayor will be joined by Deputy Mayor, Councillor John Orlikow (River Heights-Fort Garry).

This weekend’s trip builds on a number of efforts to strengthen relationships with the CAF, including a number of visits, tours and meetings with 17 Wing, a Christmas Card program for overseas members of 17 Wing, visits to the Military Family Resource Centre, attendance at Change of Command ceremonies, hosting the Air Cadet’s Freedom of the City Ceremony at City Hall, participating in Exercise Parcel Push with Fort Garry Horse and attending candlelight vigils at Brookside Cemetery. In May of 2019, the Mayor traveled to France at the invitation of Joël Bruneau, Mayor of Caen in Normandy, France for a multi-day commemoration of the 75th Anniversary of the battle of Normandy.

“Being present among Canadian veterans remembering the battle of Normandy was a gripping experience to be part of,” said Mayor Bowman. “The level of pride and emotion in the faces of the veterans and their families is something I will never forget. One of the greatest ways we can show our gratitude to Canada’s veterans is to remember the sacrifices they made on our behalf and to learn more about the role of our CAF in our past and present.”
