Released: September 28, 2021 at 5:18 p.m.

Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to two significant structure fires on Tuesday, September 28, 2021.

Point Douglas Fire

At 11:21 a.m., WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a vacant warehouse in the 0-100 block of Point Douglas Avenue.

When crews arrived on-scene, they found a well-involved fire with smoke and flames coming from the building. A second alarm was called, increasing the number of apparatus and WFPS crew members on scene. A defensive attack was launched as the structural integrity of the building was comprised, making it unsafe for crews to enter.

Due to the severity of the blaze, WFPS crews are expected to be on scene for an extended period of time, bringing the fire under control and then extinguishing hotspots. Local road closures are in effect and residents are advised to avoid the area.

Homes in the vicinity of the fire are being temporarily evacuated as a precaution.

One firefighter was treated on-scene by paramedics and transported to hospital in stable condition. No other injuries have been reported at this time. Crews are being rotated in and out due to the hot weather conditions. In total 33 different fire and paramedic apparatus have been dispatched to the scene, with approximately 100 WFPS members.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. No damage estimates are available at this time.

Alexander Avenue Fire

At 11:53 a.m., WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a two-storey, single-family house in the 500 block of Alexander Avenue.

When crews arrived on scene, they encountered smoke and fire in the structure. They launched an offensive attack, declaring the blaze under control at 12:19 p.m.

Firefighters located and brought one individual to safety. The individual was assessed on scene by paramedics and transported to hospital in stable condition. No other injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimates are available at this time.
