Winnipeg, MB – At 1:38 p.m. on Saturday, August 28, 2021, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a fire in a two-storey, single-family house in the 400 block of Martin Avenue West.
When crews arrived on scene, they encountered light smoke coming from the structure. They launched an offensive attack, knocking down the blaze and declaring the fire under control at 2:05 p.m.
Crews rescued two occupants from the house. They were assessed on-scene by paramedics and taken to hospital in stable condition. No other injuries were reported.
While the fire is still under investigation, preliminary observations indicate it was accidental, caused by unattended cooking. Residents are reminded of the following safety strategies to prevent kitchen fires:
- Always stay in the kitchen while cooking.
- Stove burners should always be turned off when leaving the kitchen, even for a short time.
- Anything that can catch fire — oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels, or curtains — should always be kept away from the stovetop.
- Oil should always be heated slowly. If cooking oil catches fire and the fire is small and manageable, use a kitchen fire extinguisher or cover the pot with a metal lid. Never use water to put out an oil fire.
No damage estimates are available at this time.
