Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to a fire on Elgin Avenue

Released: August 26, 2021 at 8:41 a.m.

Winnipeg, MB – At 12:34 a.m. on Thursday, August 26, 2021, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a fire in a vacant, two-storey house in the 400 block of Elgin Avenue.

When crews arrived on scene, they encountered a well-involved fire. Due to the heavy flames and smoke, and damage inside from previous fires in January 2020 and April 2019, they launched a defensive attack from the exterior using aerial water streams. By 1:33 a.m. crews had knocked down most of the fire and were working to extinguish hotspots.

Residents of a neighbouring home were temporarily evacuated as a precaution and have returned home. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimates are currently available, but the building is considered to be a complete loss.
