Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fire on Smith Street

Released: August 14, 2021 at 11:42 a.m.

Winnipeg, MB – At 3:52 a.m. on Saturday, August 14, 2021, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to an automatic alarm at an eight-storey high-rise hotel in the 300 block of Smith Street.

A second alarm was called due to the potential for high life hazards when dealing with a high-rise structure, increasing the number of apparatus and WFPS crew members on scene.

Once on scene, crews determined there was smoke coming from a suite on the seventh floor. The fire was extinguished by the sprinkler system. Crews ensured all hot spots were extinguished and the fire was declared under control at 4:31 a.m.

All occupants of the hotel were evacuated as a precaution. No injuries were reported.

Fire damage was contained to the suite of origin. Water and smoke damage impacted some additional suites. Twenty-one displaced guests were relocated by hotel staff to another facility.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimates are available.
