Winnipeg, MB – At 5:34 p.m. on Thursday, August 12, 2021, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to a report of a fire inside a single-family, two-storey house in the 200 block of Adsum Drive.
When crews arrived on scene, they quickly knocked down the fire with an offensive attack, declaring the fire under control at 5:51 p.m.
Occupants self-evacuated prior to crew arrival. One patient was assessed by paramedics on-scene and transported to hospital in stable condition. No other injuries were reported.
Crews located a dog and rabbit and brought them to safety.
While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, preliminary evidence indicates that the fire originated in the kitchen. Residents are reminded of the following safety strategies to prevent kitchen fires:
- Always stay in the kitchen while cooking.
- Stove burners should always be turned off when leaving the kitchen, even for a short time.
- Anything that can catch fire — oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels, or curtains — should always be kept away from the stovetop.
- Oil should always be heated slowly. If cooking oil catches fire and the fire is small and manageable, use a kitchen fire extinguisher or cover the pot with a metal lid. Never use water to put out an oil fire.
No damage estimates are available at this time.
