Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fires on Home Street, Davidson Street, and Selkirk Avenue

Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to two fires late last night and one early this morning

Home Street Fire

At 11:23 p.m. on May 24, 2021, WFPS responded to a garage fire in the 100 block of Home Street.

When crews arrived to the address, they found smoke coming from the garage with flames extending to an adjacent porch. An offensive attack was launched and the fire was knocked down by 11:54 p.m.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation and no damage estimates are available.

Davidson Street Fire

At 11:29 p.m. on May 24, 2021, WFPS responded to reports of smoke in a single-storey home in the 400 block of Davidson Street.

When crews arrived on scene, an offensive attack was launched and the source of the smoke was found to be a fire in the dryer. The fire was quickly brought under control.

Occupants from the home safely self-evacuated prior to the arrival of crews and no injuries were reported.

Observations suggest the fire was accidental, caused by a malfunction in the operation of the dryer. Residents can reduce the risk of these types of fires by following these important tips:

  • Have your dryer installed and serviced by a professional to ensure it is in good working order.
  • Do not use the dryer without a lint filter and always clean the filter after each load of laundry.
  • Periodically check the venting system to ensure there is no lint buildup and it is not damaged, crushed, or restricted.
  • Make sure the outdoor vent flap opens when the dryer is running.
  • Never leave a dryer running when leaving your home.

Selkirk Avenue Fire

At 7:09 a.m. on May 25, 2021, WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a two-storey house in the 700 block of Selkirk Avenue.

Upon arrival on scene, crews encountered smoke coming from the house and individuals trapped on the upper level. A fire ladder was used to bring the occupants to safety while an offensive attack was launched. The fire was declared under control at 7:43 a.m.

Three occupants from the house were assessed by on-scene paramedics and transported to hospital in unstable condition. No other injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and damage estimates are not available at this time.
