Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fire on College Avenue

Released: May 17, 2021 at 10:07 p.m.

Winnipeg, MB – At 7:06 p.m. on Monday, May 17, 2021, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a fire in a one-and-half storey home in the 400 block of College Avenue.

When crews arrived on scene, they encountered flames and smoke coming from the home. Firefighters used a Flameguard X-Tinguish Fire Suppression Tool, an aerosol device that reduces temperatures, which allows safer access for firefighters. Crews then launched an offensive attack, declaring the fire under control 7:53 p.m.

All occupants safely self-evacuated before crews arrived. Two firefighters sustained minor injuries during the response and were both transported to hospital in stable condition.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimates are available.

Flameguard X-Tinguish Fire Suppression Tool (FST)

The WFPS is undertaking a pilot project to evaluate the effectiveness of the Flameguard X-Tinguish Fire Suppression Tool (FST). The FST can reduce temperatures and disrupt fire spread in a confined space, resulting in safer conditions for occupants and firefighters, and reducing water use and overall damage.
