Winnipeg, MB – As part of our commitment to ensuring the health and safety of our residents and employees, and in consideration of changes announced this evening to the Province of Manitoba’s public health orders, the City of Winnipeg is suspending all of its recreation and leisure programs and services, including Leisure Guide programming, and closing all City-owned and operated recreation facilities, gyms, indoor pools, arenas, and libraries effective end of regular operations tonight, and until further notice.
No employee layoffs are planned at this time, as we’re looking for opportunities to redeploy staff impacted by these closures.
Although community centre facilities and assets are owned by the City, they are their own legal entities, each governed by volunteer board of directors. Each community centre board is responsible for the management and operations of their centre, and are ultimately responsible for the decision to close their community centre.
Visitors at our parks, including our skate parks and playgrounds, are reminded to maintain a distance of at least two metres/six feet from every other individual who is not from their household.
In addition, effective Sunday, May 9, groups larger than five people will not be permitted in our parks or athletic fields. Parks booking requests continue to be suspended until further notice.
We will review the formal public health orders once released to determine whether there are any additional impacts to our services.
