Winnipeg, MB – At 5:52 p.m. on Monday, April 26, 2021, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a fire in a six-storey apartment block in the 400 block of Kennedy Street.
Upon arrival on scene, crews encountered heavy smoke in the building. A second alarm was called, increasing the number of apparatus and WFPS crew members on the scene, due to the potential for high life hazards when dealing with an occupied apartment block. An offensive attack was launched and the fire was declared under control at 6:31 p.m., contained to the suite of origin.
Some of the occupants of the building self-evacuated prior to the arrival of crews and some were evacuated by WFPS. Many occupants on floors not impacted by the fire were advised to shelter in place. Four individuals were assessed by on-scene paramedics, one of which was transported to hospital in stable condition. No other injuries were reported.
All occupants of the building were able to return to their suites once crews completed ventilation of the building, with the exception of the suite where the fire originated. The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimates are currently available.
