Winnipeg, MB – The City of Winnipeg is reopening a number of recreation and leisure facilities previously closed due to COVID-19, and recalling approximately 75 temporary, part-time employees who were previously laid off to support the reopening of these facilities.
Beginning Monday, March 8 the following recreation and leisure facilities will re-open for limited fitness service only:
- Chief Peguis Fitness Centre
- Cindy Klassen Recreation Complex
- Elmwood Kildonans Pool
- Fort Rouge Leisure Centre
- Freight House Recreation Centre
- Kinsmen Sherbook Pool
- Pan Am Pool
- Sergeant Tommy Prince Place
- St. James Assiniboia Centennial Pool
Pools and arenas remain closed until further notice.
Residents are encouraged to book fitness blocks prior to arriving at the facilities, as there is no guarantee of available blocks for registration upon arrival, due to capacity restrictions. The blocks will be offered on a week-by-week basis and reservations can be made up to 30 minutes in advance of the pre-reserved time (space permitting). Every Thursday, another week of fitness blocks will be added to what’s available for registration. No group activities will be available.
Register at leisureONLINE to reserve an available block, or contact 311 for assistance in registering. Residents can also register on-site for available blocks, as facilities open.
Capacity at these facilities is limited to ensure physical distancing guidelines are maintained. Individuals are asked to maintain a distance of at least two metres from every other individual who is not in their household. Fitness areas will be closed to the public for 30 minutes between the two-hour blocks to sanitize and allow for reasonable time for public to vacate the facility prior to the next scheduled block. Please come dressed to use the fitness amenities, as the changerooms will not be open.
These facilities will also be available for residents who need a temporary spot to seek reprieve from the cold.
Under current Public Health Orders, we are required to collect contact information from visitors when entering our recreation and leisure facilities. To make this process safer and more convenient, we will be using a QR code-based system.
Upon entering our recreation and leisure facilities, visitors must scan the QR code using their smart phone camera app and enter their name and phone number in the digital form. For those without a smart phone, front desk staff will manually input their information in the digital form. Only one member of each household is required to enter their contact information. The data will be stored on a secure network for 21 days, and only accessed if required by a public health investigation in consultation with our Privacy Officer.
In the event a potential exposure occurs, individuals may be notified by Manitoba Health’s contact tracing personnel.

Winnipeg Public Library additional locations & expanded hours of operation
On Monday, March 1, 2021 all Winnipeg Public Library branches will be open for contactless holds pickup and returns only, with the exception of the Cornish Library, which will remain closed for renovations. The hours of operation will expand, and they will all be open on Saturdays. The book return chutes will be available 24/7.
