Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to two fires in the city.
Milton Street Fire
At 9:47 p.m. on Friday, February 12, 2021, the WFPS responded to reports of fire in a house under construction in the 200 block of Milton Street.
When crews arrived on scene, they encountered the house completely engulfed in flames. The fire extended to the two neighbouring houses – one occupied and one under construction. Crews launched a defensive attack and the fire was declared under control at 10:45 p.m.
Occupants of the home safely self-evacuated prior to the arrival of crews. No injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. There are no damage estimates available at this time, but the two houses under construction are considered complete losses. They were both in the wood-framing stage of construction. The occupied home suffered moderate smoke and fire damage.
Drivers in the area should use caution as the water used to fight the fire covered the road and has now frozen. City crews will be monitoring the area and applying sand and de-icing agents as required.
McDermot Avenue Fire
At 7:42 a.m. on Saturday, February 13, 2021, the WFPS responded to reports of fire in a two-storey, multi-family house in the 800 block of McDermot Avenue.
Upon arrival on scene, crews found smoke coming from the structure. An offensive attack was launched and the fire was contained to the suite of origin. It was declared under control at 8:10 a.m.
All occupants of the house self-evacuated prior to crews arriving. On-scene paramedics transported one individual to hospital in stable condition.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, and no damage estimates are available at this time.
