Winnipeg, MB – At 11:09 a.m. on Friday, February 12, 2021, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of fire in a home’s attached garage in the 200 block of Kingston Row.
When crews arrived on scene, they encountered heavy smoke coming from the garage. Crews launched an offensive attack, declaring the fire under control at 1:25 p.m.
Occupants of the home safely self-evacuated prior to the arrival of crews. One firefighter was transported to hospital in stable condition for an injury obtained on scene.
There are no damage estimates available at this time. Preliminary observations suggest the fire was accidental, originating with a vehicle parked inside the attached garage. WFPS reminds residents to follow these safety tips to prevent these types of fires:
- Always ensure block heaters, extension cords, and receptacles are in good working condition with no nicks, frays, or exposed wires.
- Never use damaged cords, including those that have been run-over or stretched when drivers accidently drive away while still plugged in.
- Do not plug in a vehicle when it’s parked inside a garage.
- Have your block heater checked annually by a licensed mechanic.
Drivers in the area should use caution as the water used to fight the fire covered the road and has now frozen. City crews will be monitoring the area and applying sand and de-icing agents as required.
