Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fires on College Avenue and McDermot Avenue

Released: November 30, 2020 at 12:01 p.m.

Winnipeg, MB – At 9:13 p.m. on Sunday, November 29, 2020, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a fire in a two-storey home in the 300 block of College Avenue.

When crews arrived on scene, they encountered smoke coming from the home. Firefighters used a Flameguard X-Tinguish Fire Suppression Tool (FST), an aerosol device that reduces temperatures, which allows safer access for firefighters. Crews then launched an offensive attack, declaring the fire under control at 10:25 p.m.

All occupants safely self-evacuated from the home before crews arrived. No injuries were reported.

McDermot Avenue

At 9:35 p.m., the WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a two-storey home in the 800 block of McDermot Avenue.

When crews arrived on scene, they encountered smoke coming from the home. Crews helped two occupants get out of the home. All other occupants of the house self-evacuated before crews arrived. Crews launched an offensive attack, declaring the fire under control at 10:17 p.m.

Crews transported two people to hospital in stable condition. Crews rescued a dog and reunited it with its owner.

The causes of both fires are under investigation. No damage estimates are available.

Flameguard X-Tinguish Fire Suppression Tool (FST)

The WFPS is undertaking a pilot project to evaluate the effectiveness of the Flameguard X-Tinguish Fire Suppression Tool (FST). The FST can reduce temperatures and disrupt fire spread in a confined space, resulting in safer conditions for occupants and firefighters and reducing water use and overall damage.

A user activates the tool manually by pulling a pin that activates an electronic ignition system. The FST generates an aerosol mist that expands to flood the space, suppressing flames within seconds.
