Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service assists with evacuation on Garry Street

Released: October 20, 2020 at 10:39 p.m.

Winnipeg, MB – At 7:41 p.m. on Tuesday, October 20, 2020, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) began the process of evacuating all occupants from a 21-storey residential building in the 0-100 block of Garry Street.

As a result of recent water damage in the building, the primary and secondary power in the building was inoperable and could not be quickly restored, causing a loss of power, heat, and the fire alarm and sprinkler system. These system failures led crews to deem the building temporarily unsafe for occupancy and it was evacuated.

The City of Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services (ESS) team was deployed to the scene to help evacuees secure temporary living arrangements until the building is safe for re-entry.

No injuries were reported. Crews will remain on scene until the evacuation is complete.
