Fire Prevention Week goes virtual amid COVID-19 considerations

Cooking and kitchen safety is the focus of this year’s Fire Prevention Week

Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) invites all residents to mark Fire Prevention Week, October 4 to 10, by learning more about kitchen and fire safety on a new webpage with interactive safety resources for all ages. This year’s theme for Fire Prevention Week is “serve up fire safety in the kitchen.”

“Each year, the WFPS responds to more than 100 house fires that start in the kitchen, some of which cause injuries, damages, and hardship, all of which are preventable” says WFPS Chief John Lane. “We’re asking parents, teachers, and residents to take the opportunity this week to review life-saving fire prevention tips with children and family members so we can prevent fires together.”

The new webpage features videos, safety tips, and activity sheets for all residents to use wherever they may be, whether they are at home, in schools, or in a workplace.

Winnipeg Harvest

In addition to the virtual campaign, the WFPS has partnered with Winnipeg Harvest to provide important cooking safety information in 10,000 food hampers that will be distributed to Winnipeg families in October.

“Studies show that housing with seniors and lower income families tend to be at a higher risk of fire related injuries,” says Winnipeg Harvest CEO, Keren Taylor-Hughes. “Thank you the WFPS for providing preventative information to help keep our clients and communities safe.”

Community Events

This week, WFPS will team up with Canadian Tire to promote the importance of smoke alarms and other fire and life safety equipment by making physically-distanced public appearances at Canadian Tire stores throughout the city. WFPS members will be available to chat with the public about how to test smoke alarms and where to install them in a residence.
