Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fires on Elgin Avenue and Aberdeen Avenue

Released: August 18, 2020 at 9:32 a.m.

Winnipeg, MB – At 1 a.m. on August 18, 2020, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a fire in the 400 block of Elgin Avenue. The incident was reported by on-duty members of the Winnipeg Police Service.

When WFPS crews arrived on scene, they encountered heavy smoke and flames coming from the home. The house had extensive damage making it structurally unsound from a previous fire on July 11, 2020. As such, a defensive attack was launched as it was not safe for crews to enter. The fire was declared under control at 2:27 a.m.

Occupants of a neighbouring home were evacuated as a precaution. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimates are currently available but the home is expected to be a complete loss. One neighbouring home suffered damage to its siding from the radiant heat of the fire.

At 1:13 a.m. on August 18, 2020, while returning from another call, a WFPS unit came across a fully-involved garage fire in the 500 block of Aberdeen Avenue.

Additional crews responded and the fire was quickly brought under control. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation and no damage estimates are currently available.
