Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fire in high-rise on Edmonton Street

Released: May 8, 2020 at 7:55 a.m.

Winnipeg, MB – At 11:10 p.m. on May 7, 2020, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a fire in an 18-storey apartment building in the 400 block of Edmonton Street. A second alarm was called, increasing the number of apparatus and WFPS crew members on the scene due to the potential for a high number of occupants in the building.

Upon arrival on scene, crews encountered smoke in the building and launched an offensive attack. The fire was declared under control at 11:41 p.m.

Some residents self-evacuated prior to the arrival of crews. A Winnipeg Transit bus was brought to the scene to provide shelter. Those residents who remained in their suites were asked to shelter-in-place while crews extinguished the fire and ventilated smoke from the building. One individual was assessed by paramedics on scene and transported to hospital in stable condition.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and no damage estimates are available at this time.
