Winnipeg, MB – Accessing information about annual spring cleanup operations just got easier for Winnipeggers. Today, the City of Winnipeg launched winnipeg.ca/springcleanup, which features everything residents need to know about the City’s spring cleanup activities, which are scheduled to begin on Monday, April 20 at 10 p.m.
The portal includes information about parking restrictions, safety tips, a comprehensive FAQ, and most notably a new searchable spring cleanup progress map that displays information on when residential streets (Priority 3) are scheduled for sweeping 24-hours in advance of scheduled operations, and when crews have completed the work.
The Know Your Zone app has also been updated to help residents know when crews are scheduled to sweep their residential streets (Priority 3) this spring, and is available for free download. The update allows residents to add their favourite addresses to receive push notifications 24-hours in advance of planned operations.
The Know Your Zone app update is currently only available for android devices at the Google Play App Store, and is expected to be available for Apple devices at the Apple App Store in the coming days.
Parking restrictions & enforcement
In March, the City relaxed enforcement of the 1-2 hour time limits on residential streets with parking time restrictions to accommodate employees who are required to be home for longer periods of time due to self-isolation and work from home requirements in light of COVID-19.
However, residents must continue to obey all other parking restrictions, including those related to the City’s spring cleanup operations.
Not all streets get “No parking” signs ahead of cleanup operations – these are typically only placed on streets that present challenges for crews. That’s why it’s very important to routinely check your street for signs, check the progress update map, and use the Know Your Zone app, and move your vehicle to avoid being ticketed or towed. The cost of a parking ticket is $150 ($112.50 if paid within 14 days), and the cost of a tow is $120.23.
Spring cleanup operations
During the 5-6 week operation, Winnipeg’s entire street network, including sidewalks, active transportation pathways, bridges, boulevards, and medians will be cleaned. Crews will also clean up litter and debris in City parks. The major operation involves over 300 pieces of equipment, and approximately 500 workers.
Residents are urged to not rake yard waste material or other debris onto streets as this can plug drains and cause ponding problems as well as increase the risk of basement flooding. Debris should be put out for regular garbage collection. Compostable yard waste material (e.g., grass clippings, leaves) can be placed out for yard waste collection in any reusable containers without a lid, cardboard boxes, or paper yard waste bags.
This year's curbside yard waste collection program will start the week of May 4 for homes in yard waste collection area "A," and will begin the week of May 11 for homes in yard waste collection area "B.” Residents can also drop off yard waste for free at one of the City’s 4R Winnipeg Depots. Yard waste is collected at the curb once every two weeks, on the same day as recycling and garbage.
