Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to house fire on Toronto Street

Released: February 5, 2020 at 2:51 p.m.

Winnipeg, MB – At 5:56 a.m. on February 5, 2020, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to an automatic alarm at a three-storey apartment block in the 700 block of Toronto Street. When crews arrived on scene, they encountered heavy smoke coming from one of the suites. Crews immediately launched an offensive attack and the fire was declared under control at 6:31 a.m.

Most residents of the complex self-evacuated from the building. WFPS crews completed a search of the complex and evacuated all those requiring assistance. No injuries were reported. Once crews completed ventilation of the building, most occupants were able to return to their suites.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimates are available at this time.

Drivers should use caution in this area, as water used to fight the fire has frozen. The City of Winnipeg is monitoring conditions and applying sand and de-icing agents as required.
