Maryland Street fire update
WFPS crews have departed the scene of an overnight fire in the 400 block of Maryland Street. The fire was declared under control at 1:25 a.m.
In order to maintain public safety, the building will be demolished to prevent any imminent hazards. Maryland Street will remain closed between Ellice Avenue and St. Matthews Avenue while the building is demolished. This closure will remain in effect, at least, through the evening rush hour.
The building was vacant at the time of the fire. No injuries were reported.
Six people and one dog were evacuated from two residences as a result of the fire. Winnipeg Transit provided a bus as temporary shelter for evacuees. The City’s Emergency Social Services connected evacuees with available resources.
Manitoba Hydro is on scene working to restore the power lines affected by the incident and estimates power restoration to be complete by 2 p.m. today.
Once the road re-opens, drivers in the area should exercise caution as the water used to fight the fire covered the road and has since frozen. The City is monitoring the area and applying sand and de-icing agents as required.
