Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to house fire on Magnus Avenue

Released: December 16, 2019 at 3 p.m.

Winnipeg, MB – At 9:37 a.m. on December 16, 2019, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a fire in a one-and-a-half-storey, single-family home in the 1000 block of Magnus Avenue. Upon arrival on scene, crews encountered heavy smoke throughout the house. An interior, offensive attack was launched and the fire was declared under control at 10:04 a.m.

All occupants of the home had self- evacuated prior to the arrival of crews. Firefighters located a cat and two dogs inside the home and brought them to safety. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire was determined to be electrical, originating with the dishwasher. Residents are reminded to avoid leaving their dishwasher running while away from home. They should also check for leaks or cracks in the interior of the appliance which can allow water into the electrical elements. Dishwashers should be turned off when not in use. If an appliance begins making a strange noise, don't ignore it - unplug it and contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair technician before using it again.
