Winnipeg, MB – At a graduation ceremony this morning, Councillor Sherri Rollins was joined by Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) Chief John Lane to formally present badges to the City of Winnipeg’s 23 new firefighter-paramedics.
“Congratulations to the graduates of the WFPS Recruit Class #1901” said Councillor Sherri Rollins, Chairperson of the Standing Policy Committee on Protection, Community Services and Parks. “It takes a special kind of person to dedicate themselves to a career like this, and we are very grateful for your commitment to serve and protect the residents of Winnipeg.”
The recruits completed an intense 13-week orientation and training program, held at the WFPS Training Academy. The course covered firefighting, rescue and paramedic operations specific to Winnipeg, in addition to the WFPS organizational and rank structure, and the history of firefighting in Winnipeg. They also received certification as Vehicle Rescue and HazMat Technicians.
“I am pleased to welcome these 23 new firefighter-paramedics into the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service family,” said Chief Lane. “They are joining our team of highly-skilled frontline staff who provide round-the-clock emergency services to Winnipeg’s residents, visitors, and businesses.”
Incoming firefighter-paramedic recruits are accepted to the orientation and training period as part of a competitive hiring process. Applicants must have already completed their Firefighting Level II Diploma at a recognized emergency services college. Recruits are also required to have a Primary Care Paramedic license certification prior to applying to join the WFPS.
