Morning thunderstorm requires significant City response

Released: September 20, 2019 at 3:15 p.m.

Winnipeg, MB – The City of Winnipeg experienced a high level of calls for service in response to the effects of a thunderstorm earlier today.

The City’s 311 services experienced delays in the late morning as it fielded over 250 inquiries in just over an hour related to flooded catch basins, as well as sewer and drainage issues.

The following reports have been received as of 1:30 p.m.:

  • Plugged Catch Basin – Front Street: 191
  • Plugged Catch Basin – Back Lane: 28
  • Manhole Cover Off or Ajar: 10
  • Sewer Back-up – Clean Water: 8
  • Sewer Back-up – Raw Sewage: 5
  • Damaged trees: 13

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) crews responded to a number of reports of vehicles submerged on streets flooded as a result of the storm. The 911 calls indicated many of the vehicles had individuals trapped inside who required assistance. Crews attended to all the reported locations and in total extricated six individuals.

WFPS also responded to a house fire in the Bridgwater area believed to have been caused by lightning. The occupant in the home at the time of the fire safely self-evacuated prior to crew arrival and no injuries were reported.

With another thunderstorm forecast for this evening, residents are reminded to take precautions including checking your home’s backwater valve and sump pump, and ensuring your eaves troughs and drain spouts are clear. Residents should also drive with caution and avoid flooded roads, particularly as water becomes less visible in the darkness.
