Winnipeg, MB – At 6:13 p.m. on September 9, 2019, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a fire in a two and a half storey rooming house in the 400 block of William Avenue. Upon arrival on scene, crews encountered heavy fire conditions involving the upper two floors of the structure. An offensive attack was quickly launched but deteriorating conditions forced crews to exit the building and fight the fire defensively. Once flames were partially knocked down, they were able to re-enter the structure and complete the extinguishment of the fire. It was declared under control at 7:21 p.m.
All occupants of the house had self-evacuated prior to the arrival of crews. One individual was assessed on scene by paramedics but did not require transport to hospital. No other injuries were reported.
The City’s Emergency Social Services team was deployed to the scene to assist 10 individuals with finding alternate living arrangements.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimates are available at this time.
