Winnipeg, MB – At 12:52 p.m. on August 10, 2019, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a fire in a three storey apartment complex in the 500 block of Gagnon Street. Upon arrival on scene, crews found fire in a third floor suite. An offensive attack was launched and the fire was brought under control by 1:05 p.m. with damage contained to the suite of origin.
One patient was treated by paramedics on scene and then transported to hospital. No other injuries were reported. Most occupants were able to return to their suites.
The fire is under investigation. Preliminary observations suggest it started in the kitchen. Residents are reminded to always stay in the kitchen while cooking. Stove burners should always be turned off when leaving the kitchen, even for a short time. Anything that can catch fire — oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels or curtains — should always be kept away from the stovetop.
