Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service Update: Henry Avenue Fire

Released: August 8, 2019 at 10:50 a.m.

Winnipeg, MB - At 8:18 a.m. on August 8, 2019, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to an automatic alarm at the Emterra Environmental facility in the 1000 block of Henry Avenue. Once on scene, crews found heavy smoke coming from a rubbish fire in one of the structures which was making its way to another structure through an elevated conveyor belt. An offensive attack was launched with crews working to protect the spread of fire to the second building. The fire was declared under control at 9:12 a.m.

Staff in the building had safely self-evacuated prior to the arrival of crews. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire will be under investigation. No damage estimates are available at this time.

Processing of recycling material at the material recovery facility will be delayed, with no timeline for return to full operations. There are currently no delays to the collection schedule, and residents should put out their bins as normal.
