Winnipeg, MB – At 5:42 p.m. on March 6, 2019 Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) crews responded to a fire alarm in a six-storey apartment block in the 400 block of Hamilton Avenue. Upon arrival, crews found a working fire in a main floor suite. A second alarm was called, increasing the number of apparatus and WFPS crew members on the scene, due to the potential for high life hazards when dealing with an occupied apartment block. Crews successfully brought the fire under control at 6:03 p.m., with damage contained to that single suite.
The occupant of the affected suite had self-evacuated prior to the arrival of crews. Due to heavy smoke on the main and second floors, approximately 30 additional residents were evacuated by crews. Winnipeg Transit buses were dispatched to the scene to provide shelter for these individuals. No injuries were reported.
WFPS crews have ventilated the building of smoke. All residents, with the exception of the individual living in the suite where the fire originated, will be able to return to their suites tonight.
The cause of the fire will be under investigation. No damage estimates are available at this time.
