Transit free for Veterans, active members of the Canadian Armed Forces, and their families on Remembrance Day

Released: November 10, 2017 at 10:02 a.m.

Winnipeg, MB – To honour the men and women who have sacrificed for our country, the City of Winnipeg will be offering free transit service on November 11 to Veterans, active duty personnel and their accompanying friends and family. Those who wish to use this free service may do so by displaying one of the following to the bus operator:

  • a military identification,
  • a CF1 card, or
  • wearing a military uniform.

When displaying one of the above, the individual only needs to identify to the operator each friend or family member accompanying him or her.

“Lest We Forget” will be displayed as a banner message on all Winnipeg Transit buses on Saturday, November 11, in rotation with regular route and destination messages. Buses will also pull over at 11 a.m. to recognize one minute of silence.

“Providing free transit to Veterans, current members of the Canadian armed forces, and their families is one small way the city is able to recognize the tremendous commitment they have made, and continue to make, to our community and country,” said Mayor Brian Bowman. “I am very pleased we were able to find a way to provide this recognition this year, and will be looking at ways to make this recognition permanent on a go forward basis.”

Funding for this initiative will come from the Civic Initiatives Fund, and is estimated to cost the City of Winnipeg approximately $10,000.

In addition, the Winnipeg Parking Authority is offering complimentary parking in the Millennium Library parking facility to vehicles bearing Veteran Licence Plates on Saturday, November 11. The Millennium Library is connected to the Convention Centre through the Skywalk from City Place, and offers an additional option for Veterans attending the ceremony at the Convention Centre.
