Winnipeg, MB - Representatives from the City of Winnipeg and David Penner Architects/Helio Rodrigues h5 Architecture were on hand today for the sod-turning to officially kick off construction on the new Windsor Park Library.
“It’s great to see construction beginning on a new, modernized Windsor Park Library,” said Mayor Brian Bowman. “I’m proud to play a role in revitalizing our communities through projects like this which will be utilized by the community for many years to come.”
“The new Windsor Park Library moving next to the Bonivital pool will create an innovative hub where individuals and families can gather to exercise both body and mind,” said Matt Allard, City Councillor for St. Boniface.
“Winnipeg Public Library is very excited to be breaking ground on a new library in Windsor Park,” said Rick Walker, Manager of Library Services. “The new Windsor Park Library will be a fully accessible, energy efficient signature building that addresses the changing needs of library service that we heard during our Strategic Planning process.”
The new 8,000 square foot signature library will include:
- An enlarged multi-use program room
- Multiple computer stations
- Ample study and leisure reading space
- A universally accessible design
- A design to LEED Silver standard of energy efficiency
- A beautiful park setting
- Plenty of parking, up to 25 stalls
- Site-specific artwork by local artist Simon Hughes, in partnership with the Winnipeg Arts Council.
The new library will be located adjacent to the Bonivital Pool and Windsor Park Golf course. The project, the second library replacement under the Council-approved Library Redevelopment Strategy, will see construction of the new facility beginning in August 2016, with an anticipated completion date in 2017. City of Winnipeg funding in the amount of $4,704,700 is has been earmarked for this project.
