City of Winnipeg begins plowing operations due to current snowfall and blowing snow

Citizens advised to watch out for equipment on P1 routes as of 11:00 p.m. tonight

Winnipeg, MB - City of Winnipeg crews are preparing to roll out as of 11:00 p.m. tonight to deal with the accumulation of snow that has been falling on city streets this evening.

In keeping with Council's policy, the following will occur:

Priority 1 streets (regional) - Grader plow operations to commence at 11:00 p.m. this evening and will continue throughout the next several hours to improve road conditions. Sand application will be provided if and where required.

Priority 2 street (collector/bus routes) - Snow hauling operations ongoing to improve sight lines in school zones, at bus stops, crosswalks and lane/alley intersections. Maintenance sanding will take place at priority locations. Crews are monitoring road network conditions and will address any areas where spot plowing may be required. Grader plowing operations will begin on this network when Priority 1 operations are complete.

Priority 3 streets (residential) - Crews are monitoring the residential road network, areas prone to drifting are being monitored and will be addressed with spot plowing and sanding where required.

Priority 1 and 2 sidewalks - Sidewalk blowing of problem areas is being done. A full sidewalk plowing/blowing operation of the P1,P2 and P3 sidewalk network will begin tomorrow (Friday).

Priority 3 sidewalks (residential) - sidewalk clearing at completion from previous snow events, with crews addressing problem areas due to the current snowfall with sidewalk blowers.

Backlanes - Lane clearing will being Saturday, January 25 at 7:00 a.m.

Citizens are urged to use caution in and around these winter equipment operations.

Citizens are reminded that the Annual Snow Route Parking Ban remains in effect daily on streets designated as snow routes from 2:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. until March 1, 2014.
