City of Winnipeg snow clearing and recycling/garbage update

Released: January 9, 2014 at 3:34 p.m.
Rising temperatures expected to help crews catch up

Winnipeg, MB - The weather is warming up in Winnipeg, which has allowed the City to begin salting operations on the P1 (regional) street network.

Crews will continue this operation as long as the trend of milder temperatures can support it. This operation will move into the P2 (collector/bus) route. Along with the salting, motor graders will be used to remove snowpack and slush as it develops.

Snow clearing on all missed P3 (residential) streets is expected to be complete by Saturday morning, January 11, 2014.

Sidewalk clearing is continuing on the residential network until completion, which is estimated to be three days.

Hauling operations are continuing with emphasis on restoring the curb lane to full service on the regional network. The City continues to address high piles of snow on the collector/bus route network.

Citizens are urged to use caution in and around these winter equipment operations.

Citizens are reminded that the Annual Snow Route Parking Ban remains in effect daily on streets designated as snow routes from 2:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. until March 1, 2014.

Plowing operations were completed in accordance with the City Council-approved Snow Clearing and Ice Control Policy, which can be found online at City of Winnipeg - Snow Clearing Policy

Recycling and garbage collection service is up to two days behind schedule in some neighbourhoods due to the effects of the prolonged frigid temperatures and snowfalls, resulting in equipment breakdowns and potential worker safety issues.

Collection service will continue through the weekend in an effort to be back on schedule for Monday’s collection, January 13, 2014.

Residents are advised to put their carts out on their regular collection day and leave them out until collection is provided.

Customers with recycling/garbage pickup delays of more than two days are encouraged to contact 311, open 24 hours every day, by phone at 311 or by email at 311@winnipeg.ca. We continue to track those as deficiencies and will work with the contractors to correct them.
