Inspections are needed for all wiring, electrical equipment, fixtures, and all associated systems related to electrical power sources. An inspection must be performed before any electrical work, or portion of work, is covered and at final inspection.
Make sure to get a permit before starting any new construction, demolition, addition or alteration to any part of an electrical system.
City inspectors review the following types of electrical installations:
- new installations, alterations and additions of electrical services, wiring and equipment
- fire alarm installations
- pools, spas, saunas, hot tubs
- transformers
- underground wiring, ducts, raceways and cables
- outdoor lighting and parking lot receptacles
- temporary and special events services
- emergency services reconnections
- renewable energy systems
- low voltage installations
- CCTV
- security alarm systems
- communication cabling
- new, additions/alterations to electrical components of mechanical systems:
- heating systems
- cooling systems
- venting systems
- cooking exhaust systems
- spray painting systems
- dust collection systems
- new, additions/alterations to electrical components of fire protection systems:
- sprinkler systems
- standpipe systems
- fire-pumps
- fire stopping systems
- chemical extinguishing systems
- smoke control systems
This list does not include all types of construction or installation of equipment.
Mandatory inspection stages
Licensed electrical contractors/permit applicants must request an inspection at completion, and before covering, at each of the following stages when applicable to the project:
- electrical service connections
- underground
- rough in
- electrical final
Multiple progress inspections may be needed at each mandatory inspection stage based on the size, complexity and progress of the project.
Licensed contractors/permit applicants must request progress and final inspections as a condition of their licence. Failure to do so may result in:
- extra fees per the Planning, Development and Building Fees and Charges schedule
- removing finishes or other construction for inspections (if work has been covered before an inspection
- suspension of contractor licence, if applicable
Note: Progress inspections must be completed to the final stage before requesting building occupancy for the full project, or any part of the project, to support an interim or partial interim occupancy proposal.
