City releases Financial Status and Forecast Report to June 30, 2022

COVID-19 and other financial pressures continue to cause shortfalls in City’s operating budget

Winnipeg, MB – The City of Winnipeg’s second quarter financial status and forecast report is forecasting a projected deficit in the tax-supported operating budget (General Revenue Fund) of $55.9 million and an additional shortfall of $14.7 million in Transit as at June 30, 2022. The financial status and forecast report will be presented at the meeting of the Standing Policy Committee on Finance on September 12, 2022.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fires on Burrows Avenue and Furby Street

Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to two structure fires this morning.

Burrows Avenue Fire

At 5:56 a.m. on Saturday, September 3, 2022, the WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a vacant one-and-a-half storey house in the 400 block of Burrows Avenue.

When crews arrived on scene, they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the house. Crews initially launched a defensive attack, transitioning to an offensive attack once it was safe to do so. The fire was declared under control at 7:03 a.m.

Upcoming temporary road closures beginning next week

Winnipeg, MB – The following are upcoming temporary road closures that will take effect next week:

Moray Street intermittent closures

Moray Street, from the Charleswood Bridge to Portage Avenue, will have intermittent closures during non-peak hours starting on Tuesday, September 6 at 9 a.m. until Friday, September 16 at 3 p.m. for roadway maintenance on eastbound Portage Avenue through the Moray intersection.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fire on Elgin Avenue

Winnipeg, MB – At 7:04 a.m. on Thursday, September 1, 2022, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a fire in a single-family bungalow in the 1500 block of Elgin Avenue.

Upon arrival on scene, crews found smoke coming from the house. An offensive attack was launched and the fire was declared under control at 7:21 a.m.

Spray pads remaining open until September 11

Winnipeg, MB – The City of Winnipeg is extending the spray pad season until September 11, 2022, offering families an extra week to beat the heat with some outdoor fun. Spray pads were originally scheduled to close on September 5.

All spray pads will remain open daily from 9:30 a.m. – 8:30 p.m. until September 11, with the exception of Michaëlle Jean Park (Norquay CC) Spray Pad, which has closed for the season.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fire on Furby Street

Winnipeg, MB – At 4:36 a.m. on Wednesday, August 31, 2022, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a fire in a three-storey apartment building in the 400 block of Furby Street.

When crews arrived on-scene, they encountered smoke coming from the building. An offensive attack was launched and the fire was declared under control at 4:59 a.m. The building suffered fire, smoke, and water damage.

New requirements for designated medical cannabis growers

Designated cannabis production facilities no longer permitted in residential areas under new licensing program

Winnipeg, MB – Designated medical cannabis growers in Winnipeg will require a Designated Growers Licence as of Tuesday, September 6, 2022, as changes to the City of Winnipeg’s Community Safety Business Licensing By-law come into effect.

Earlier this year, City Council approved changes to several bylaws that restrict growing cannabis in residential neighbourhoods.

City of Winnipeg’s Fall 2022 Leisure Guide registration to commence today at noon

Winnipeg, MB – Earlier this morning, registration was set to open for Fall 2022 Leisure Guide registration. Unfortunately, due to an unforeseen technical issue with our third-party vendor affecting clients throughout Canada, many users were not able to access the online registration system. It was incredibly unfortunate timing, as it coincided with the opening of Leisure Guide registration, and was out of our control. As such, we had to temporarily suspend registration.
