City asks citizens for assistance in locating suitable Christmas tree for City Hall

Released: October 8, 2015 at 10:27 a.m.

Winnipeg, MB - Officials from the City of Winnipeg's Public Works Department are asking Winnipeg homeowners with large spruce trees to contact them if they are interested in donating their tree for City Hall's annual Christmas tree display.

The City received information about a number of potential Christmas tree candidates for this year's holiday display, but none have met the criteria.

To be considered for the City Hall Christmas tree, a spruce tree must meet the following criteria:

  • be located in the front yard of a property with direct access to the tree
  • be 12 to 15 metres tall (approximately 40 to 50 feet)
  • be fully symmetrical with a single trunk and no brown needles

Urban Forestry Branch staff select the tree that best meets the identified criteria.

The selected tree donor does not receive compensation for the tree, but crews remove the tree at no cost to the homeowner as well as clean up debris and remove the stump to approximately two inches below ground level.

Homeowners who would like to submit their tree for consideration are asked to contact 311, open 24 hours every day, by phone at 311 or by email at .
