Winnipeg Public Library launches Inspiring Ideas public engagement process

Winnipeg, MB - Libraries across the world are undergoing exciting changes and are evolving to meet community needs. As part of a five-year strategic plan directed by City Council, the Winnipeg Public Library is reviewing its collections, spaces, services and programs through a public engagement process called “Inspiring Ideas.”

From now until the end of June, 2014, public input will be gathered online and in-person at special events. The ideas and input gathered will be used to help shape Winnipeg Public Library’s future, with a new five-year strategic plan being to be released by the end of 2014.

The campaign was officially launched today at an event held at The Metropolitan Entertainment Centre, and featured noted library visionary and author, Ken Roberts, speaking to the Future of Libraries and trends from around the world. Interactive stations including an ideas mural, survey ambassadors and a photo booth gathered the first ideas from those in attendance.

“Libraries remain a vital part of our communities and neighbourhoods and we as a city have made a commitment to continue supporting and sustaining the library system for current and future generations,” said Brian Mayes, Councillor for St. Vital and Chair of the Protection and Community Services Committee of Council.

“We are really excited about the opportunity to hear what the public has to say and are encouraging Winnipeggers to get involved by going to the “Inspiring Ideas” web site and help shape the future of the Winnipeg Public Library,” said Rick Walker, Manager of Library Services.

Here’s how to get involved:

  • Fill out the online survey and help plan the future of the library by sharing your ideas. Print surveys are also available at library locations.
  • Read up on current trends and innovations in libraries as inspiration.
  • Browse the calendar of events to find out where survey ambassadors will be in your community.
  • Attend one of four special events where interactive stations will gather ideas:
    • Thursday, May 22 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.: Henderson Library, 1-1050 Henderson Highway
    • Saturday, June 7 from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.: Sir Wm. Stephenson Library, 765 Keewatin Street
    • Wednesday, June 11 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.: Millennium Library, 251 Donald Street
    • Tuesday, June 17 from 5:00 p.m.to 8:00 p.m.: Pembina Trail Library, 2724 Pembina Highway
