City releases October 2017 financial update

Winnipeg, MB – The City of Winnipeg’s latest Financial Status Report cites a year-end projected surplus in the tax-supported operating budget (General Revenue Fund) of $1.7 million as at October 31, 2017, and represents a $1.3 million improvement over the September projections. Based on the projected surplus, no additional transfer from the Financial Stabilization Reserve Fund is anticipated at this time.

Winnipeg Transit presents the Santa Bus

Winnipeg, MB – The Santa Bus is driving holiday spirit starting Friday, December 1 until Sunday, December 24; Winnipeg Transit's bus #142 will feature larger-than-life vinyl graphics of Santa and all of his reindeer. All cash fares and donations collected on the Santa Bus will go directly to the Christmas Cheer Board.

“Last year, my bus raised $9,624.80 and we’re ho-ho-hoping to collect even more this year for individuals and families in need,” said Mr. Claus.

City of Winnipeg Winter Leisure Guide now available

Winnipeg, MB – The Winter 2018 Leisure Guide is now available at all civic indoor pools, libraries and leisure centres, and will be available this Saturday at a number of retail locations. Winnipeg Free Press subscribers will receive a copy in today's edition of the paper.

The Leisure Guide can also be viewed online by visiting winnipeg.ca.

Activity registration will have staggered start dates as follows:

Tuesday, December 12 at 8:00 a.m. – Registration begins for swimming lessons only.

Annual Snow Route Parking Ban begins Friday, December 1

Winnipeg, MB – The City's Annual Snow Route Parking Ban will take effect at 2 a.m. on Friday, December 1, 2017. Vehicles may not park on streets designated as snow routes between 2 a.m. and 7 a.m.

The Annual Snow Route Parking Ban is in effect from December 1 to March 1.

Avoid a ticket and tow
Snow routes are clearly marked with signs like these:

Citizens are encouraged to check their streets for snow route signs, or if unsure, to call 311 or use the online Address Lookup Tool.

Impact Fee Working Group holds first meeting

Winnipeg, MB – Today, the Impact Fee Working Group held its first meeting to advise on the impact fee’s implementation during the phase-in period. Members of the working group will provide elected officials and members of the Public Service with recommendations regarding rates and their manner of application, as well as input into the OurWinnipeg review and projects funded from revenue generated by the impact fee in an advisory role.

Bonivital Pool shallow pool reopens following temporary closure for water testing

Winnipeg, MB – The public is advised that the shallow pool at Bonivital Pool, located at 1215 Archibald Street, has reopened after water tests deemed it safe to do so. The shallow pool was closed late last week due to unscheduled maintenance caused by irregular water quality readings.

The City would like to thank patrons for their patience during this closure.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service issue warning regarding theft of narcotics from ambulance

Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) is advising the public that six vials of narcotics were stolen on Monday, November 27, 2017 at approximately 3:00 a.m., from an ambulance parked in the ambulance bays at the St. Boniface Hospital.

The medication, which is packaged in vials, consisted of:

  • Midazolam – two (2) vials
  • Fentanyl – four (4) vials

The WFPS is alerting the public that taking any amount of these drugs without medical supervision can be dangerous or fatal.

Bonivital Pool shallow pool temporarily closed for water testing

Winnipeg, MB – The public is advised that the shallow pool at Bonivital Pool, located at 1215 Archibald Street, is closed until further notice due to unscheduled maintenance caused by irregular water level readings.

The larger lap pool and hot tub remain open to the public. Registered patrons and rental groups impacted by the temporary closure of the shallow pool have been contacted and advised.

Water testing and proper procedures are being followed to protect public safety. The facility will reopen once it has been determined that it is safe to do so.

Saskatchewan Avenue from Cavalier Drive to Hamilton Avenue to be closed for a year for Saskatchewan Avenue road reconstruction and Sturgeon Creek culvert replacement

Winnipeg, MB – Starting on Sunday, November 26, Saskatchewan Avenue from Cavalier Drive to Hamilton Avenue will be completely closed to both eastbound and westbound traffic for the construction of the new Saskatchewan Avenue Bridge over Sturgeon Creek and Saskatchewan Avenue roadway reconstruction and rehabilitation between Cavalier Street and Hamilton Avenue. Saskatchewan Avenue will remain closed for about a year while the project is underway, until October 31, 2018. Motorists should allow additional time to get to their destinations, and use alternate routes.
