Supporting our neighbours during flood season

We’ve provided sandbags and staff to help northern Interlake communities prepare for rising water

Every flood season can bring uncertainty, but it also brings people together. While the current outlook shows no properties at risk of flooding in Winnipeg, we’re working quickly to help our neighbours to the north.

Peguis First Nation is preparing for flood conditions. In partnership with the Province of Manitoba, we’re supporting the northern Interlake community as it braces for the rising Fisher River.

Making sandbags

We’ve made and provided over 220,000 sandbags to be used in Peguis. We’re also continuing sandbag production should more be needed around Manitoba. While we’re sharing our sandbags, we’re maintaining a stockpile for emergency use within Winnipeg.

On top of sandbags, we’ve loaned out one of our sandbagging machines. It will be used to help make them in Fisher River Cree Nation, which is also under flood threat.

Lending a hand

Earlier this week, around 50 of our employees travelled to Peguis First Nation to provide hands-on support.

They were filling sandbags and building dikes designed to protect the community. These staff members were able to step away from regular duties for a short period to help the flood fight.

Being in the public service is about more than just supporting our own community. We’re also ready to be there for our neighbours in times like these.
