A four kilometer stretch of protected bike lanes from West Alexander to East Exchange District has received national attention in the bike community.
The project recently landed on Canada Bikes’ top 10 list of the best new bike projects in the country.
“The West Alexander to East Exchange Corridor is an important connection for Winnipeg’s cycling network,” said Christopher Baker, the City’s acting Active Transportation Coordinator.
Completed in fall 2018, the one-way protected bike lanes run on McDermot Avenue and Bannatyne Avenue from Sherbrook Street to Waterfront Drive.
The use of local artists to paint the bike lanes and the addition of back-in angled parking are a few of the reasons the project stood out to Canada Bikes.
“We understood the importance of continuing to include on-street parking as part of this project,” said Baker. “By incorporating back-in angled parking, we were able achieve no net loss of on street parking in the area.”
Other cities recognized include Calgary, Victoria, and Halifax.
