Winnipeg, MB – Our Neighbourhood Action Teams have wrapped up their first season of tackling many small tasks to make a big difference.
Launched in June, the program was designed to proactively solve everyday maintenance issues. Three separate teams — staffed with experts in streets maintenance, forestry, and landscaping — ended this season’s work at the end of October.
“We set out to tackle the to-do list of outstanding issues in every neighbourhood, and these teams punched through a lot of it this season,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham. “From potholes to branches to graffiti, they were out there fixing the small things that make a big difference. And with more teams coming next year, we’re going to get even more done for residents.”
Work the teams completed this year included:
- Filling approximately 34,710 potholes by hand with 868 tonnes of asphalt
- Trimming 1,615 hazardous branches
- Repairing 944 signs
- Repairing approximately 2,700 sq. metres of boulevards
- Cleaning 506 sq. metres of graffiti
“The ability for Councillors to work with Neighbourhood Action Teams to identify immediate needs in the neighbourhood is proving to be very effective,” said Councillor Janice Lukes, Chairperson of the Standing Policy Committee on Public Works. “I’m very pleased with the results to date.”
Team members have transitioned to doing other work around the city for the winter, including:
- Supporting our snow and ice control program
- Cleaning debris, fallen limbs, and other hazards on an as-needed basis
The Neighbourhood Action Teams will return in early spring, ready to continue fixing problems and being a positive force in the community.
