Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fires on Bannerman Avenue, Ellice Avenue, and Redwood Avenue

Released: March 2, 2026 at 3:10 p.m.

Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to three structure fires this morning.

Redwood Avenue fire

At 10:31 a.m. on Monday, March 2, 2026, WFPS crews responded to reports of a fire in a two-and-a-half storey house in the 500 block of Redwood Avenue.

Upon arrival on scene, crews found smoke and flames coming from the house. Firefighters entered and launched an interior fire attack, declaring the fire under control at 11:14 a.m.

Firefighters searched the house and no occupants were found. No injuries were reported.

The fire is under investigation. Damage estimates are not available.

Ellice Avenue fire

At 8:28 a.m. on Monday, March 2, 2026, WFPS crews responded to a fire in an industrial warehouse in the 1800 block of Ellice Avenue.

When firefighters arrived, they found a damaged gas line that had been struck by a forklift. The line fed a small heater, and the heat from the heater ignited the leaking gas. This caused a small fire and a buildup of natural gas in the building. The building’s automatic sprinkler system helped contain the flames.

Firefighters shut off the gas supply and fully extinguished the fire. Manitoba Hydro crews were deployed to the scene to assist with mitigation.

Crews evacuated the building during the response and ventilated the structure before allowing anyone to return.

No injuries were reported.

The incident is considered accidental. Damage estimates are not yet available.

Bannerman Avenue fire

At 7:25 a.m. on Monday, March 2, 2026, the WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a vacant, single-storey, mixed-use commercial and residential building in the 400 block of Bannerman Avenue.

At the scene, crews found heavy smoke and flames coming from the building. Firefighters launched an exterior fire attack as it was not safe to enter the structure. They used handlines to pour water on the fire and protect neighbouring houses.

The WFPS drone was deployed to provide aerial and thermal imaging, helping crews direct water streams and locate hotspots.

The building has sustained severe smoke, fire, and water damage. Due to structural concerns and to aid in the location of hotspots, WFPS is arranging an emergency demolition of the building. The building was damaged in a previous fire on February 18, 2026.

Neighbouring houses were evacuated as a precaution. No injuries were reported.

The fire remains under investigation.

Water from firefighting efforts will freeze, creating slippery conditions in the area. Once responders clear the scene, City crews will monitor the site and apply sand and deicing materials to roads and sidewalks as needed to improve traction.
