Winnipeg Public Library announces the first Maker-in-Residence term of 2026

Released: January 26, 2026 at 10:51 a.m.

Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Public Library is pleased to announce Anna Schmidt as the next Maker-in-Residence at the Library.

Schmidt is a fibre artist and educator who celebrates quilting as both an art form and a practical way to repurpose textiles. She established Common Loon Quilts in 2021 and is committed to making fibre arts fun and accessible.

“I am thrilled to have this opportunity to share my passion for this craft,” said Schmidt. “Anyone can transform old textiles into new purposes.” During her term, Schmidt will include sessions to collaborate on making quilts for the community.

The Maker-in-Residence program operates out of the ideaMILL at Millennium Library. Schmidt’s term will run from February 4 to April 30, 2026. Throughout the program, the maker will offer weekly drop-in studio time to invite visitors into the creative process with activities to learn new skills in fibre arts, sewing, and quilting. The maker will also offer workshops at library branches.

Schmidt is the first of three makers who will share expertise with the public in 2026.
