Upgrades include new changerooms, sauna, and modernized building systems

Winnipeg, MB – Grab your swimsuit and goggles, Bonivital Pool has officially reopened!

Today, the City of Winnipeg held a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the reopening of Bonivital Pool (1215 Archibald St.). The reopening follows major renovations that will ensure the facility will be enjoyed by swimmers and families for years to come.

“This is part of our long-term plan to renew Winnipeg’s aging pool infrastructure so families can continue relying on modern, accessible facilities for decades to come,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham, who noted the 2026 Preliminary Budget Update also includes funding to develop a new outdoor aquatic centre in St. Boniface, as well as keeping the Windsor Park Pool open.

The project included:

  • Accessibility upgrades in the front lobby, including new universal and gendered changerooms
  • A new accessible sauna (coming soon) and multi-purpose room incorporated into the open pool deck area
  • Upgrades to the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), water heating system, and air handling unit
  • Upgrades to the lighting system, fire alarm system, and power distribution to support the upgraded mechanical system

Bonivital Pool was originally built in 1975. It closed for renovations on May 13, 2024, as many components reached the end of their expected life. It reopened to the public on November 17, 2025.

“Community pools like Bonivital are cornerstones of neighbourhood life—places where families connect, kids learn to swim, and residents come together year-round to stay active and healthy,” said Councillor Vivian Santos, Chairperson of the Standing Policy Committee on Community Services. “These upgrades not only modernize the facility but make it more inclusive and accessible for everyone. I’m proud to see the City and Province working together to invest in community infrastructure that will serve Winnipeggers for generations to come.”

The project cost was approximately $9.88 million, with $5.36 million approved in the City’s 2021 Capital Budget, and $4.52 million from the Province’s Arts, Culture and Sport in Community Fund, Large Capital Program.

“Over the years, I’ve heard from ward residents that investing in pools should be a priority in St. Boniface, and I listened,” said Matt Allard, Councillor for St. Boniface. “I’m pleased that, between the first phase of this project, which addressed immediate repairs in 2019, and the completion of this second phase, more than $10 million has been invested in the Bonivital Pool over the past six years.”

“There is no City-run indoor pool in the St. Vital Ward, so this facility has been well used by St. Vital residents for generations,” said Brian Mayes, Councillor for St. Vital. “I am pleased to see the upgrades and want to thank Councillor Allard for championing this project over many years.”

The upgrades at Bonivital Pool complement the major expansion now underway at St. James Civic Centre and the renovations coming soon to Seven Oaks Pool, as well as a long-term spray pad development plan — investments that will renew aging facilities and build the next generation of aquatic spaces for Winnipeg.
