Winnipeg, MB – We’ve made it easier for Winnipeggers to help keep Downtown streets and sidewalks litter-free.
Installation has begun on more than 100 new garbage bins on Main Street and Portage Avenue. The bins are designed to better contain litter and prevent waste from spilling onto surfaces.
“One of the most frustrating things to me is seeing trash on the sidewalk and garbage bins with their lids flipped wide open,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham. “That’s why I asked our Public Works team to find a better option. These new lockable bins will help keep downtown cleaner. And, if they work as well as we expect, we’ll look to add more throughout the area.”
Crews are replacing existing bins on Main between Higgins Avenue and River Avenue and Portage between Sherbrook Street and Main Street.
The new units will replace old, damaged receptacles that were easy to rummage through and frequently did not contain garbage – leading to a higher chance unsightly spillage and unkempt surfaces.
While they aren’t failsafe, the new bins feature a hopper that opens and closes, along with a locked access point for City collection.
Crews are about a third of the way through installation. We expect all bins in the project area to be replaced by November 14.
