Winnipeg, MB – November is National Radon Action Month, and Winnipeg Public Library has partnered with the Manitoba Lung Association to make testing your home for radon easier.
Radon is a radioactive gas that is found naturally in the environment. It is the second leading cause of lung cancer, after smoking. Since radon has no colour, no odour, and no taste, the only way to know if your home has radon is to test for it.
Winnipeggers can now borrow a radon screening kit for free from any Winnipeg Public Library branch, just like a book.
“Libraries are one of the most accessible ways for residents to learn and take action,” said Vivian Santos, Chairperson of the Standing Policy Committee on Community Services. “This partnership makes it easier for families to protect their loved ones and feel confident that their homes are safe. Borrowing a radon screening kit is a simple step that can make a big difference.”
Winnipeg Public Library is joining a growing network of libraries that provide access to radon screening devices to more than one million Manitobans. This is possible thanks to the combined effort of:
- Manitoba Lung Association
- Canadian Association of Radon Scientists and Technologists
- Health Canada
“The only way to know your home’s radon level is by testing,” said Sherri Rollins, Councillor for Fort Rouge – East Fort Garry. “By offering free screening kits through our libraries, we’re removing barriers and helping more Winnipeggers take that step. Thank you to the Manitoba Lung Association for helping to put these screening kits within reach of households across Winnipeg.”
To borrow a radon screening kit, residents can visit the Winnipeg Public Library online catalogue and search for ‘radon’ or visit their nearest branch.
“Libraries are a great resource in our community,” said Juliette Mucha, President & CEO of the Manitoba Lung Association. “Starting today, every Winnipeg Public Library will offer radon screening devices, making them accessible and available to over ONE MILLION MANITOBANS! We believe everyone deserves to live fully and breathe freely—without fear of hidden dangers in the places they should feel safest: their homes.”
Radon screening kits will be available to borrow between November 1 and April 30 each year. Because radon readings are less accurate in the summer months when people have windows and doors open more, kits will not be available to borrow between May 1 and October 31.
